After winning the Spanish Kart Championship in 1990, Marc Gene competed in karting for one more season before moving up to Spanish Formula Ford in 1992.

Wins followed over the next two seasons before a move to F3 in Britain. F3000 followed in 1997 but championship success would come the Spaniard's way in Open Fortuna by Nissan in 1998.

This propelled Gene, who has a degree in economics, into Formula One with the Minardi team where he started 33 Grand Prix over the next two years.

Out of a race seat in 2001, Gene landed the testing role at BMW Williams. He made three starts for the team standing in for Ralf Schumacher. Monza 2003 saw a mature drive to fifth position, but his French and British races in 2004 were less successful.

A move to Ferrari as test driver followed in 2005 where he remains with the Italian squad while also competing in the LMS series with Peugeot. With limited testing available in 2009, it remains to be seen how much seat time the team will be able to provide.
