Kubica reaches the 100 career points mark
|
Robert Kubica's third place at the European Grand Prix saw him pass a significant milestone: the BMW Sauber driver picked up another six World Championship points last weekend in Valencia, and has now won exactly 100 points throughout his entire Formula One career to date.
The points are spread out over the past three years. Kubica has claimed 55 points so far in the 2008 Formula One season; after just twelve races, this is already 16 more than the 39 points he picked up over the whole championship last year. In his first (partial) season for the team, the Pole gained six points in 2006.
Kubica's position in the Drivers' World Championship has, accordingly, improved year by year. In 2006 he ended the BMW Sauber F1 Team's debut year in 16th place, but had not participated in a full season. In 2007, he improved that result by 10 positions. This year, Robert Kubica is currently in fourth place overall, two points behind Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen.
The good result in Valencia was crucial in regards to his championship standing, especially since Raikkonen left the European Grand Prix without taking any points following his engine failure.
Kubica's great qualifying performance was
"the weekend's decisive moment" for him.
"I was third on the grid, and it turned out today (Sunday) that I had more fuel on board than the two cars ahead of me," he explained.
"For that reason, the qualifying laps were particularly good. That was the key."
