Time to enjoy the title ahead of contract talks
Jenson Button won the drivers’ championship with a strong drive from 14th on the grid to fifth on Sunday in Brazil. It was a fighting drive from the Brawn Mercedes driver who achieved a life-long ambition as Felipe Massa waved the chequered flag. Now he intends to relax, enjoy the moment, and not think too far ahead.

“It’s only been one day after I won the world championship and I’m not going to think about the future,” Button told BBC Radio 5 live. “At the moment I’m going to enjoy this time – this doesn’t happen to many people and I’m in a great position here and I’ve worked for this for 21 years of my racing career. It has become my life, I’m going to enjoy this and I’ll look to the future – whether it’s weeks or months I don’t know.

“I’m going to go and see the team tomorrow – enjoy my time with them – the people that made this happen and then spend the evening with my family and friends.

The 2009 Formula One World Champion does not have a contract for next season with Brawn, but the team has always stated that it is their intention to re-sign the British racer for next season. Button himself is not unduly concerned about the situation.

“We didn’t want to talk about it in the season because it can get stressful talking about contractual issues and I leave that to my managers to sort out anyway. It’s nice to have wrapped up both championships so we can sit down and discuss the future.

“But as I’ve just said, I’m not going to think about that for a little while – I’ll give them a call next week, or in a couple of weeks and we can discuss where we go from there.”
