| It was a fairly routine Friday for most with little in the way of incident or accident. Timo Glock led the way for the Toyota team with a best lap of 1:18.383s as a second covered the top 17 drivers. Glock’s performance was impressive, but it could be a little show-boating from the team as they actually own the Fuji Speedway. |

| Fernando Alonso was second fastest in his Renault underlying the progress the Anglo-French squad has made late in the season. Team-mate Piquet was 12th fastest. Lewis Hamilton set the third fastest time in his McLaren ahead of the Ferrari duo of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. |

| Mark Webber moved up the order late in the session and ended the day sixth fastest in his Red Bull Renault. Kazuki Nakajima was next up for Williams while Sebastian Vettel, Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli rounded out the top ten. |
